“When I first received a brief for ‘a single line’ the first thing that occurred to me was a single line someone would say. As a newlywed these single lines still have a great impact on me. However when I read the Voltaire quote, I went on to use, I was completely taken by the way my art was encompassed. I always use nature as an inspiration and embroidery is my favorite and most practiced medium. I also wanted to continue the brief through my artwork by presenting the quote in a single line, stitched with a single piece of thread. I thoroughly enjoyed this brief and hold its result very close to my heart, both in what is written and the way its written and once again the ability to use a silk scarf, a theme that continues throughout my work and has a great and meaningful history behind it.”

“Using a single line to illustrate the view from a window in my home. Two of the drawings show the steeple of St Paul’s church in Deptford while the third drawing shows a view of the interior looking out onto the church with a head of Buddha and cat.”

“Thinking about a single line brought to mind for me an idea which I always seem to come back to… A journey, an adventure or more a metaphorical idea. Represented for me often as the repetition of something like a stitch. I wanted this piece to continue along the lines of my Re-Made project and found a beautiful old map, which are wonderful to look at in themselves. I found one which has my Grandmas’ farm on in North Wales, which I have traveled to 4 or 5 times a year since I was a week old. But then when faced with the map I realised even though I’ve been so many times there was a lot of places I’ve never been to. So I wanted this piece to be a subtle representation of the things I’ve seen, weighted with memories of trips to the seaside, walks up Snowdon and now that I’m older the nearest train station, nearly an hour away from the farm. For me, this single line is a place to escape.”
